SMELLING OUR OWN FLOWERS
SMELLING OUR OWN FLOWERS 🌺
"Give folks some flowers, while they still can smell them," is an old admonition our church elders often said to promote an enthusiasm for life among the living, not the dead.
This aphorism speaks to my spirit this morning, as I reach out to reiterate expressions of gratitude to my maternal cousin, Edward Merriweather and his wife, for their wonderful hospitality, meals, and lodging that was given to me and my wife, for a few days in January 2009, in Washington, D.C., when Barack Obama was first sworn in as first black United States President!
That was truly something else, the kindness of our cousin, and the historical inaugural event itself!
The area hotels were all filled, but our folks found a way , made a way. This is what we used to do back in the day, when Jim Crow tried to get in our way. We zipped around him!
Our many national, regional and state organizations of African descent may well wish to consider returning to some form of this old standby, of "taking folks in," rather than just paying high hotels' bills or boycotting anybody's business!
The Montgomery Improvement Association's "Bus Boycott" found a way around the private bus company's racism in 1955-1956, with their carpooling, gypsy-cabbing, walking, bicycling , other. That same creative spirit must be put to good use; taken out of moth balls: revised, reviewed, revisited.
It is time that we smelled our own flowers, again, like we used to do!
