SUCCESSFUL U.S. "CREOLE" SLAVE REVOLT OF 1841

Great Creole Revolt in Bahamas in 1841 The "Creole" was an American slave ship that was taken over by the slaves in 1841, and sailed into Nassau, Bahamas, a British territory that was by then slave-free. It was the most successful slave revolt in U.S. history before the Civil War. It was on the "Creole" in 1841! A total of 128 slaves gained freedom, including Madison Washington the revolt leader, helped by 18 other men. Washington had earlier escaped slavery in Virginia, but returned to retrieve his wife, when he was captured. However, 3 of the slave women refused to leave their captors-lovers, preferring to remain in slavery they sailed to New Orleans with the ship, as did 2 children But all of the others left to begin new lives free from slavery! Always remember that the most successful slave revolt in U.S. history was on board the "Creole" in 1841. http://www.blackpast.org/gah/creole-case-1841
