FRIED SHRIMP REFLECTIONS

BREADED FRIED SHRIMP REFLECTIONS I can still remember the first time that I had ever tasted breaded fried shrimp. I can still see that green, plastic, frozen package it came in! "Grand-daddy," Mama's daddy, had brought some to our home in the 1950s. I must have been 8 or 9. It was his first time visiting us from Milwaukee; my first time meeting him, though not the last, happily! As far as I knew, Grand-daddy was rich! He drove a new big Buick with white walled tires, power windows, power brakes, power steering. His guest was a 21- year old hammer, "fox," as we used to say. She was fine, even to young inquiring eyes! Granddaddy was also a man who was enamored of the sporting life : horse races, cards, fine living, and the "Dirty Bird," Old Crow whiskey. Thus, he had spent much time in Chicago, on the weekends, after getting paid at the Allis-Chalmers' plant where he worked, and often fought Pollocks, as he called them! His taste for breaded fried shrimp was perfected in Chicago, if it was not acquired there; since his World War II naval experience had carried him to the Far East, to China, where such a delicacy may also be eaten. Our family, feasted, communally, on a gift, that deliciously breaded fried shrimp and its sides. A whole lot of snacking, smacking and cracking was going on at our blessed table! There are very few seafoods, or any kind of food, whatsoever, that is as good as breaded fried shrimp! Eat it with ketchup, tartar sauce, hot sauce, or shrimp sauce, all 4! Try some tonight! you'll love it!
