DID THE SOUTH REALLY LOSE THE CIVIL WAR?

If the "South" lost the "War Between the States," a proposition that is, itself, highly debatable, given the ubiquity of Copperheads--Southern sympathizers and their agents--in the "North," and in the Republican Party, the "South" certainly did not lose the subsequent peace, for which it had, it seems, to have sensed & to have prudently planned for, it now appears in retrospect. Such plans included making Andrew Johnson of Tennessee (a Confederate state) Vice President to President Abraham Lincoln in the seminal election of 1864. Assassinating Lincoln in 1865, by agents of Confederate Secret Service was another element, according to William Wells Brown's history "The Negro in the War of Rebellion." Adhering to Lincoln's "Let them up easy," terms of surrender for the rebels, which immunized rebel troops from trials for treason, left them in possession of their side arms, and restored their civil rights to vote, own land, and hold office by a simple loyalty pledge. Mustering out black troops in 1866, and consigning others to fight Indians in the Far West; removing the more bellicose blacks away from the true theater of operations in the South, where the return to white supremacist rule was anterior to all else, albeit, without chattel slavery, as such! Allowing 10% vote of a state to declare itself loyal to the United States as the basis for readmission in 1867; divesting blacks of all land titles, martial or actual, to those very same "abandoned lands," they had previously worked on during the war, growing crops and/or been promised. Conveying those same lands back to their prior rebel owners or heirs, or to the highest bidder, or to the political cronies of Republicans in power, along with their growing crops in 1866-1867, left the blacks landless, homeless and penniless. Not prosecuting, pursuing, nor punishing white terrorists organizations or individuals who had persecuted the freedmen unmercifully even to the point of death to the point of subverting state and local governments, while the federal government did nothing, added official sanction to the retribution on blacks! Although certain legal protections were purportedly put in place, like the passing of laws and Constitutional Amendments, these turned out to be "clouds without rain," that were never enforced by courts nor by law enforcement: judges, sheriffs, or prosecutors! Of course, the dam broke formally in 1877, with the Hayes-Tilden Compromise in which secret, unknown powerbrokers and fat cats representing the vested economic interests of Northern capital , which funded both Democrats of the South and Republicans of the North, agreed to a separate peace at black expense! The Republicans got the White House--or, more properly, the "Executive Mansion," as it was then known--the Democrats got a free hand to do with the blacks as they wished, as their "heritage" decreed! So Southern sovereignty prevailed after the Civil War as before, with the exception that the blacks were no longer chattel slaves, but were now economic and political peons and pawns of despotic white supremacist practices, in the North and South, until the 1950s-1960s Civil Rights movement sought to reify what was already written in America's lying, illusory and largely hypocritical laws! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War
