THE FAILURE OF "FULL INTEGRATION"

The more I read Jack Greenberg's epic insider account of the NAACP/Legal Defense Fund school (LDF) "integration" effort, post-Brown, the more I become convinced that both entities grossly overplayed their hands in pressing, relentlessly, for full integration!

The present peril in which public education finds itself is a consequence of their blind, integrationist zealotry. Black students walked the gauntlet in openly hostile environments. Black teachers, administrators, and service personnel lost their jobs, as black schools, which were the prime community anchors closed down, and communities disintegrated.

White folks fled, to avoid integration, and as many blacks, who were able, followed right behind in search of the quality desegregated education that being with whites portended.

Of course, opportunistic politicians seized the initiative afforded by this societal disequilibrium, as did scholars, pundits, preachers, activists and entrepreneurs of all colors.

To my knowledge, neither the NAACP nor the LDF have ever apologized to the nation, nor to blacks, for this error in judgment, or for its destructive sequel. One such is warranted! Confession is good for "The Souls of Black Folk."

The book by Greenberg is entitled, CRUSADERS IN THE COURTS: Legal Battles of the Civil Rights Movement (2004).
