White people need 'treatment'

"[O]n February 20, 1852, Gerritt Smith circulated a letter to Governor Washington Hunt [New York], in which he argued whites, not blacks, were depraved, and that colonizing white racists was an 'infinitely better solution ' to the race problem than trying to rid the country of blacks. 'It is we, the whites, not they, the blacks, who need 'treatment,' he argued.
