This mulatto mountaineer, came to Missouri as a boy from Virginia, before it was a state with his white father; but left home as a teen to trap beaver with a trading crew out of St. Louis, who had followed the Missouri River and tributaries into Indian territory. "Jim Beckwourth, Black Mountain Man, Example Explorer, Guide, War Chief of the Crows, Trader, Frontiersman, Interpreter, Trapper, Adventurer, and Gaudy Liar," by Elinor Wilson (1972); and "The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth , Mountaineer, Scout, Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation, written from his own dictation by T. D. Bonner" (1856).
