This minstrel song by Stephen Foster , OH SUSANNAH that we sang as kids, contains a lyric about “five hundred niggers” dying on a sunken river boat . As such it is redolent of the STAR SPANGLED BANNER’s black racism. I happened upon this fact while reading FORCED INTO GLORY: ABRAHAM LINCOLN’s WHITE DREAM (1999) by Lerone Bennett Jr., p. 92. Imagine! Now, Ole Susannah ain’t the only one crying! I am joining her lamentations!
