MERENPTAH & ISRAEL
"'Libya lies destroyed, the country of Hittites is pacified, Canaan is captive with all its wicked ones, Ascalon is conquered, Geser is taken, Yeonom is reduced to nothing, Israel is devastated, emptied of its seed, Syria has become a widow for Egypt.'
"'Excerpt from a "by Victory Hymn of Merenptah."
"The thirteenth son and successor to Ramses II, Merenptah, ("Beloved of Ptah"), reigned from 1224-1214 BC. In the fifth year of his reign, a force of Libyans (Meshouesh), and so-called "Sea People" (Shardanes, Lukas, Turshas, Shekelesh, and others), supported by Philistines and Danunas launched a joint attack against Egypt. They suffered a swift and crushing defeat in the Delta. The name of Israel appears just once in Egyptian texts, namely on the triumphal stele of Merenptah, erected to celebrate this victory during the fifth year of his reign: 'Israel is devastated; her seed is no more.' (Line 27 of the stele)"
