MALCOLM X
ONE BIG MALCOLM X TAKEAWAY
One of the best parts of the amazing book, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X by Alex Haley is the point after which inmate, Malcolm Little, while in prison, wakes himself up, straightens up, steels up and disciplines himself by a regimen of reading, rigorously, after his brother, Reginald, had communicated to him about some strong teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, of the Nation of Islam, which Reginald was in, that black man was "original man!"
I had checked this book out from our Webster Groves, Missouri, high school library in 1966. I carried it
around, face-down, among other 10th grade, school books, reading it, clandestinely, to avoid unnecessary complications as to why I was reading such a book with certain persons lacking intellectual curiosity or genuine interest beyond their own mundane menagerie of diminutives.
I was most impressed by Malcolm's reading of an entire dictionary to upgrade his vocabulary, then later tackling all of the books in his prison library. No wonder he was so sharp! Reading broadly will make you sharp.
Would that young and older people, of every "race" black, white, Asian, Hispanic , whatever , would read rigorously in America! Then we could avert the aspirations, of much less the actual election, of despots on any level of government or elsewhere! We could also heal our broken lands, heal estranged spirits, or purloined hearts.
That is my one big takeaway from the epic book :THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X (1966) by Alex Haley .
