SENATOR CLEMENTA PINCKNEY, PASTOR OF EMANUEL A.M.E. CHURCH WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN RAISING FUNDS TO ERECT THIS STATUE TO DENMARK VESEY IN 2014, AMID EGREGIOUS OPPOSITION FROM RACISTS. THIS NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE BY DOUGLAS R. EGERTON, WHOSE BOOK ON VESEY I READ SOME YEARS AGO NEAR MY 2005 VISIT TO THAT CITY ILLUSTRATES THE DEGREE OF ENMITY.
